In Japan, the 6th century Indian Buddist monk, Bodhidharma, known as Daruma, found enlightenment upon meditation in a cave. In the process, his limbs shriveled and his eyelids were cut off. Hence, he is famously represented by a papier-mâché doll. The Japanese character representing prosperity, luck, and fortune graces the smooth, red Daruma in brilliant gold strokes. Considered the protector of households, businesses, and political campaigns, Daruma dolls are sold sans pupils. These are painted in when its possessor's wish--a victorious election or successful and profitable year, perhaps--has been achieved. This daruma is more a display piece and may not upright all the time. Made in Japan.
