Made in Japan, this blue dragon bowl shows a fierce and highly detailed Japanese dragon flying in the clouds with Mt. Fuji in the background. The designs of dragons which are legendary mythological and folklore creatures were heavily influenced from China. Seen mostly as water, rain, or river deities, dragons are known as “Ryu” or “Nihon no Ryu” which means Japanese Dragon. There are many mythical stories about these dragon deities and even myths about dragons living in lakes near temples. In one of these stories, a Zen priest once saw a 9-headed dragon come out of a lake near a shrine on Mount Haku and saw the dragon transforms into a goddess. Folklores like these are celebrated with festivals and firework shows in places like the Lake Saiko Dragon Shrine in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi. The dragon designs can be seen on both inside and outside of the bowl.
